Fluent is a language learning app that helps you practice speaking through AI-powered conversations. This page explains what data we collect and how we handle it. We aim to be straightforward — no legalese.
What we collect
Conversation transcripts. When you speak during a conversation, your audio is sent to Google Cloud Speech-to-Text to be transcribed into text. We store the text transcript of your conversations (both your messages and the tutor's responses) so you can review them later and track your progress.
We do not store your audio recordings. Audio is transcribed in real time and immediately discarded. We never save, retain, or replay your voice recordings.
Learning data. We store data related to your learning progress:
- Grammar corrections and explanations from your conversations
- Vocabulary encountered during conversations
- Fluency scores and conversation completion history
- Spaced repetition data for vocabulary review
User settings. If you configure the app, we store your preferences: display name, target language, proficiency level, and explanation language.
Anonymous rate limiting. If you use Fluent without an account, we temporarily record your IP address to enforce a daily conversation limit (3 per day). This data is not linked to your conversations.
What we don't collect
- Voice recordings (discarded after transcription)
- Email addresses (unless you create an account)
- Payment information
- Tracking cookies or advertising data
- Location data
Third-party services
Fluent uses the following services to function:
- Google Cloud Speech-to-Text — transcribes your spoken audio into text
- Google Cloud Text-to-Speech — generates the tutor's spoken audio responses
- Google Gemini — powers the AI tutor's conversation and feedback
- Supabase — handles authentication if you create an account
- Vercel — hosts the app and landing page
Your conversation text is sent to Google Gemini to generate tutor responses and grammar analysis. Google's data usage policies apply to the processing of this data.
Data retention
Your conversation history, progress, and vocabulary are stored as long as your account exists. Anonymous user data is kept as long as it remains associated with your device identifier.
Your choices
You can use Fluent without creating an account. Anonymous sessions use a device identifier generated by your browser.
If you'd like your data deleted, contact us and we'll remove it.
